    High School Diploma or GED Required

    Three (3) years outpatient coding experience and the ability to code and review the following patient types: ambulatory surgery, observation, outpatient services (diagnostic), and emergency Department. Required

    Licenses and Certifications
    One or more of the following: Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), Certified Professional Coder Hospital Outpatient (CPC-H), Registered Health Information Tech (RHIT), or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) Required


    Job Summary
    The Outpatient Coding Auditor is responsible for performing in-depth review of select outpatient services, observation, ambulatory surgery, and emergency department medical records to ensure that the assigned codes are supported by clinical documentation and all diagnoses and procedures are coded with the required specificity. In addition, the Outpatient Coding Auditor performs documentation assessments and reviews for accurate abstracting of clinical data to meet regulatory and compliance requirements.
    • Performs quality reviews of coded outpatient encounters to validate the assigned codes. Provides ongoing individual feedback to the coder as applicable and keeps supervisor informed of these activities.
    • Mentors new coders and cross trains other coders. Provides ongoing feedback and education to coding staff.
    • Assigns and sequences ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS,CPT, and HCPCs diagnostics and procedural codes for designated patient types which may include outpatient services, observation, ambulatory surgery, and emergency department records for billing and reimbursement. Utilizes Medicare and American Medical Association (AMA) coding guidelines.
    • Reviews physician documentation and coding for appropriateness and accuracy, and makes corrections following Medicare and American Medical Association (AMA) coding guidelines. Reviews accounts for correct assignment of present on admission (POA) requirement.
    • Assist Patient Financial Services (PFS) with interpretation and selection of appropriate ICD, CPT, and HCPCs codes and other information requested for accurate billing and reimbursement. Possess knowledge and understanding of failed bill parameters. Effective use of 3rd party software (encoder and coding review) to review/obtain coding and patient data (lab, radiology, pathology, transcription) Completes monthly coding reports on individual accuracy and efficiency statistical reports and provides them to supervisor. .
    • Provides ongoing and individual feedback to the coder as applicable and keeps supervisor informed of these activities. Participates in department meetings and assists in conveying coding tips and education to staff as requested.
    • Participates and assists with the denials process and assigned special projects. Addresses National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits, Outpatient Code Edits (OCE), and Local Coverage Determinations (LCD) edits, and other applicable coding edits.
    • Participates in continuing education activities to enhance knowledge, skills and keep credentials current.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
